Anyone for "Pippen Composte"? NOT a dish of garden-composted apples (don't use those, that would be very bad), but Giles Rose's #C17th#recipe#applesorchardnotes.com/2024/09/28/g...#orchard

Realised what it reminds me of (the european equivalent): the c16th/c17th apprentices who went round with swords out, banging them on things and yelling for people to fight them.

I'm looking for a copy-editor who's comfortable reading early modern (late C17th) Spanish - the only editing that needs doing is English text, but they need to be able to read the Spanish too. Any recommendations grateful received 📝

If Englishness (as we'd see it now) is bound up in Providence/exceptionalism then it feels to me like C16th-C17th is the zone. Milton? Marvell?

Today I learned that what I had always supposed to be a modern US term, “Fall” is actually an abbreviation of “Fall of Leaf” commonly used as an alternative term for Autumn in c16th/c17th England!

Interesting light at Stokesay Castle after thunderstorms. The finest medieval fortified manor house in UK, it’s one of the jewels of #SouthShropshire It was begun in late C13th by wealthy merchant, Laurence of Ludlow, but the gatehouse is C17th. Garrisoned in English Civil War it surrendered easily
