California is the other big driver, which is why a lot of textbooks have "California editions." Underfunded school districts buy secondhand curriculum from these two markets, which determines what their students will learn. So Texas & Florida end up having outsized influence on national education.
I was astounded at the number of people on social media who learned about the Japanese internment for the first time from...George Takei. That's such a big part of California's curriculum, but huge swathes of adults were like, "wait, we did what?!"

This is the key, right here. And there are still a number of large states, who sell textbooks to alllll the smaller states, who are working hard to make sure "certain things" are kept out of modern curriculum.

I've seriously wondered how much of a school curriculum could have Looney Tunes woven throughout. There's a wide variety of music, a foundation of modern history in settings and characters, and for a media/cinema class, the overlap and parody of then-contemporary films and Hollywood culture....
They’re non statutory guidelines, free schools, academies and private schools don’t even have to follow the national curriculum. So much of this is performative interference.
I’m reluctant to say “didn’t pay attention”. I don’t love blaming kids for being kids, or teachers with a huge number of students for not making sure everyone actually *gets* the material. Parents being involved, curriculum density, and so much more factors in. There’s a lot to pay attention to.
I tend to like tables or lists of questions! Couldn’t get on board with those curriculum road maps / snakes for the same reason. I am about to go for a dog walk and roast dinner, but may come back to it! 🤔
