Can anyone confirm? I’ve not heard this before.

Think Hurricane Helene doesn't affect you? Spruce Pine, NC was the world's only source of the quartz required to make semiconductors.
Spruce Pine got decimated by the storm. There are no alternative sources known.
Global semiconductor manufacturing could end within six months.

I try not to post screenshots from the other place but this is absolutely nuts. The entire semiconductor industry relies on a single source of quartz in NC that got obliterated by Helene. There are no alternative sources known. Global semiconductor manufacturing could grind to a halt soon.

The modern economy rests on a single road in Spruce Pine, North Carolina. The road runs to the two mines that is the sole supplier of the quartz required to make the crucibles needed to refine silicon wafers. There are no alternative sources known.

Rhodochrosite is all over museums! Here are some of my favorite pics from Carnegie Natural History Museum, Pittsburgh, PA. Red #rhodochrosite#MinCup

Transparent red rhodochrosite rhombohedra with visible cleavage planes on black tetrahedrite.
Sparkling fine-scale black manganite crystals with dogstooth gemmy red rhodochrosite crystals creeping around the manganite.
This specimen is displayed on a clear shelf labeled: RHODOCHROSITE on MANGANITE South Africa.
Large rock with black sphalerite nodules, white quartz spires and pink rhombohedral rhodochrosite.
Display notation: RHODOCHROSITE & QUARTZ Alma, Colorado
Curious specimen with pink rhodochrosite, off-white books of thin tabular bertrandite and purple fluorite cubes.
Label reads: BERTRANDITE, RHODOCHROSITE and FLUORITE Kazakhstan

Nah. Synthetic quartz for crucibles is a bit more expensive but it would be in place in six months.

This is only kind of right. It's the high-purity quartz for making crucibles to cast ingots to slice into wafers; the silicon source for the wafers themselves isn't rare. And synthetic crucible quartz is an option, but currently more expensive.

@edconway.bsky.social thoughts on that Spruce Pine quartz mine not having a road?

I love our new house in general, but I can assure you that whoever selected the white quartz countertop did not love borscht.

Ah, chillig.

Tweet von @DustinMulvaney: "Almost every crystalline silicon photovoltaic module and semiconductor chip made in the world today relies on this mining district in western North Carolina." + Bild mit Text: ""Here's something scary", says one veteran of the sector. "If you flew over the two mines in Spruce Pine with a crop duster loaded with a very particular powder, you could end the world's production of semiconductors and solar panels within six months." No high-purity quartz means no Czochralski crucibles, which means no monocrystalline silicon wafers, which means, well, the end of computer chip manufacture as we know it."

+ Quote-Tweet von @FossilLocator: "How do I express that I’m concerned about the people of western NC and I’m also concerned about the potential future global economic disaster because Spruce Pine is the sole producer of ultra pure Quartz for crucibles that all global semiconductor production relies on?" + Karte: Spruce Pine im Überschwemmungsgebiet in N.
