I wish I had a quick and easy "tell" for these isolates I suspect of being siderophore producers (UV fluorescence). Microbial iron experts, is there an easy and inexpensive plate test? I used to think a bit of ferric chloride on a plate...but it might be toxic?
ICYDK - red bioluminescence is rare. Most fish @ those depths can't see red. Some dragon fish who see red do it the normal way, but the ones in Malacosteidae jump through some weird biochemical tricks, doing fluorescence in the retina to shift wavelength (!!!) biolum.eemb.ucsb.edu/organism/dra...

Down with rhodochrosite! Calcite can be fluorescent. One of the most well known occurrences of fluorescent calcite is in Franklin, New Jersey, USA. It's the bright orange bits in this rock #minerals#MinCup24www.mineralcup.org/2024/vote/r3m3
Its ubiquity grants calcite the power to inspire wonder everywhere in the world, with such variety in growth habit, clarity, and fluorescence. Calcite always has my vote.
