Really, legislatively abolishing the monarchy sans referendum should be seen as a mercy - parliaments and other organised groups of people have sentenced unelected leaders to far worse fates.

It seems especially weird to insist that abolishing the monarchy should require a popular vote when establishing the monarchy didn't.

Essentially because, I think, the monarchy was never legitimate. Abolishing it just recognizes this, it does not change the fundamental state

I mean since I'm vomiting hot takes I'd also add that I think it would be entirely legitimate (if not politically savvy) for Parliament to also abolish the monarchy without a referendum, because again, some things are so abhorrent it is not necessary to wait for popular consent to stop them.

FPTP may be popular, it may be not, but in my mind, that is totally irrelevant. Its existence prevents the emergence of governments that affirmatively command the explicit support of a majority of the population. It must be destroyed for the same reason a dictatorship or a monarchy would have to be.

I do not believe that people should be just "allowed to choose how to elect their governments" without caveat, no. What if they choose to return to absolute monarchy? Should that be entertained? Because in my mind it's a violation of human rights whether it is popularly endorsed or not.

I can't think of anything more anti-American than this flag being flown at the Washington monument. I mean, come on, Canada still follows the English monarchy ffs. And the American flag is backwards. This has to be a bit because its just so disrespectful.
