Looking for my recipe for pickled pears, I pulled out this ring bound notebook, which has a load of pickle recipes in it. It turns out to also have the lyrics to the first HP Lovecraft (the band, not the author) albums.

An open ring bound notebook with the lyrics for Blue Jack of Diamonds, Electrallentendo, At the Mountains of Madness and Mobius Trip written in ballpoint pen. Written down maybe 30 years ago?

Strongly recommend this chutney recipe from Amanda Hesser’s “the cook and the gardener” - which was a wedding present & contains many slightly odd recipes plus a number of ones I love!

6 apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
3 pounds green tomatoes, peeled and cut into 1-inch cubes
2 cups raisins
2 teaspoons ground ginger
2 teaspoons ground allspice
2 tablespoons sea salt
1 teaspoon black peppercorns, crushed
1 teaspoon white peppercorns, crushed
1 large knuckle ginger (size of a golf ball), peeled, sliced, and minced
2 onions, sliced
2 cloves garlic
3 cups sugar
2 cups red wine vinegar (1 500ml bottle works)

Add all ingredients to pan, simmer until thick. Sterilise jars,

Nice with some chilli added too. Good to eat right away but better if you can bear to leave it mature for a few months.

Also works well with pears instead of green tomatoes

You stop out! 😂 Sunday is the day for it! I'm using half the pears mix for a pie (well, pastry topped dish), its too difficult to make a sugar free gluten free crumble topping.

Being a domestic goddess, have made mushroom pâté (we had loads left over) and stewed pears and blackberries. Just having a nice sit down with a coffee and then I'm prepping veggies for a roast. Doing extras so I can make bubble and squeak for tomorrows supper. How's your Sunday going?

A Rainheta apple grown in Portugal’s Oeste region, and Portugal’s own Pera Rocha variety. Time for some stewed fruit! #orchard#apples#pears

Finally wash the uncovered dough with the glaze mixed with an egg. Bake at 400f until golden brown. Then lower to 350f until the pears are done.

Then cut the puff pastry into two sheets. Spread the walnut mixture plus some glaze on each leaving a generous border. Placed sliced pears on each, alternating in a wave pattern. Added more glaze + demerara sugar + diced candied ginger on top.

A nippy morning. Anu and I are out before sunrise, doing a quick check on some trees. There were high winds Tübinger night, so a lot has come down on the Helden tree. I should have laid nets down like last time, but had no time. And no time today as off to the fruit show again. Taken too much on.

In the foreground, a hillside Meadow covered in dew. Two dark trails showed the path the dog and I took. In the background, the sky is a Rosie pink waiting for the sunrise.
The ground under a large pear tree littered with pears.
On the right in the mid ground, a 15 meter tall pear tree. On the left four ground a border collie sitting. The background of the left the sky just before the sunrise.
