Marathon refinery workers in Detroit have been striking for the first time in 30 years and DPD has been forcing them to let scabs cross the picket line, per this Detroit Will Breathe post on IG from 3 days ago.

Marathon refinery workers are on strike in Detroit for the first time in 30 years. Workers, organized in Teamsters Local 283, are striking for cost of living raises, safer working conditions, better healthcare, and to make the refinery a fully union shop. As soon as the workers went on strike, Detroit police were deployed to the scene, and it wasn't long before cops broke the picket to force trucks through to the refinery. The power of the strike comes from the potential of the workers to stop or slow production, by withholding their labor and stopping materials and goods from flowing in and out of the refinery. When the workers try to flex this power and stop the flow, it's the cops, whose role it is to protect private property of the ruling class, that intervene on the side of the employer.

Another job of the police is to enforce the capitalist order by cracking down on dissent. About two dozen DPD officers are continuously stationed across the street from the picket to break the strike, and it's no coincidence that they are from the DPD's Mobile Field Force. These are the very same officers that are routinely deployed to attack and surveil social movement protests, and have been harassing and breaking up block parties and parades across the city all summer. When the police force tanker trucks through a picket line, attack a block party, or beat and arrest protestors, they expose their real role in society. The enemy of the working class are those that exploit their labor, attack their unions, and keep them divided.
Screenshot of a text post: Social divisions such as racism are also used by capitalists to weaken the unity of the working class, but the labor movement and social justice movements are natural allies. It is the people in workplaces, such as the Marathon refinery, that have the power to bring the economy to a halt. A strong working class, able to strike both for wages and for social gains, is essential to win the kind of radical change we need to end police violence and free Palestine. The labor movement and the social justice movements strengthen each other when they take up each other's causes in solidarity, and come to each other's defense. We stand in full solidarity with striking Teamsters at the Marathon refinery! We urge activists in the social justice movements, and the broader community, to join the workers on the picket line. The picket line goes 24/7 and the main gate to the Marathon plant is at 12800 Toronto St. in Southwest Detroit. We hope to see you there!
