But then the first night he's away, neither of them really stops working after they break for supper. Ruolai brings his work to the desk in the first floor parlor, it's a report he's working on, along with a couple different books he's using tables from to calculate things and charts he's making to include in the report, and he just doesn't stop. Cishu is doing a first read of whatever she's translating, and then she takes up some sewing, and then she takes up a separate book to read, and she doesn't want to disturb Ruolai, and then she realizes that he's just... filling the time while Tunan is gone.
And honestly, so is she. It's getting later and later and she is getting bleary, but she's not sleepy, and watching Ruolai work, it feels like he's just going to keep working until Tunan gets home.
She goes over to the desk and puts her hand on his shoulder and he looks up. "You know he's going to be fine," she says.
He nods. "I know," he says, and looks back down at his papers, and then

She squeezes his shoulder. "He's going to be away for two nights, and you need sleep, Ruolai," she says, because she's quite certain that he will work at this desk until he falls asleep at it.
"I'll just lie awake," he says.
"Well, so will I, but there's no sense starting out tomorrow with headaches and sore eyes too," Cishu says. "Come on, let's get into pajamas and tell stories or sing songs until one of us falls asleep, and then at least the other one will be cozy while they're awake. Your room, or mine," she says.
"Hmm," says Ruolai. "My room's smaller, it'll feel more cozy."
And so they do that, she brushes her teeth and puts on a set of pajamas and bundles herself up in a dressing gown and brings an extra pillow and taps on his door when she's ready. He opens it for her and has the covers already turned down.

It's a double bed with nice corner posts, and she hangs her dressing gown over the footboard and crawls in. He puts out the lamp and climbs in after her, and they just lay there in the dark for a while, talking about the weather report and the garden and the cat, and then Ruolai actually yawns, but now Cishu is feeling pretty awake.
"Try to sleep if you want," Cishu says, and pats his hand. They're laying next to each other as if they were laying in a field stargazing, she thinks, except it's just the cracks of light on the ceiling from around the curtains.
"Hmm," Ruolai says, but he turns away from her, onto his side, and apparently he tries to go to sleep, but after about five minutes (or it could be an actual eternity, Cishu can't tell anymore), he rolls onto his back with a sigh.

"I agree," she says in the darkness, and he huffs. "Actually, let me cuddle you, turn back on your side," she says. He makes a sort of skeptical noise but he does it, and she scoots in behind him, nestled up against his back, and snuggles close, and no, she can't look over his shoulder from here but it's kind of nice to curl up against his back and arse and she throws an arm around him so that she's hugging him around the middle, and he kind of relaxes into it, and it's very nice.
And before long his breathing evens out, and yes, perhaps she's now up even later than he is but it just feels nice to take her time falling asleep, and she's starting to feel really heavy, and then next thing she knows it's after dawn.

#WIPWednesday A little behind the scenes peek at holiday prep... I'll have a limited number of hand-painted ornaments this year (2 different kinds, 18ish total). Because I use oil paint, I have to start wicked early. They take a long time to dry between layers - been working on them since August!
