I don't even have this feeling with Guns N Roses, and GNR have always had way more pop sheen to them.

It made me appreciate bands like Judas Priest, who rip your face off every night and are totally, unapologetic-ally metal. People loved these shows. I'm glad I went, but I never need (or want) to see Metallica ever again. The soul had left the building.

I've seen plenty of big rock and roll acts at the stadium level. At some point of course there is repitition. Of course it's anodyne. But this was somehow worse, because Metallica. It made me want to find Kerry King and be like: You were right all along, Kerry.

So the camera work for the guitar just focuses you in on there. All the sudden all the small details that made it like Disneyland, while also just hiding away the strange bits were inescapable. I found myself wondering about their home lives. It made me want to not be successful like they are.

Kirk Hammet rips on guitar. They played Whiskey in the Jar on Greeny, Gary Moore's legendary Les Paul. Not only does it go unremarked (which is strange) - but when the camera goes to Kirk (which is rarely) it's always focused on his right hand. Because Papa Het is a king of the right hand.

But then I was just struck by how completely and utterly they have eaten themselves. The Metallica machine is so big, and so successful, that there isn't anyone in the entire Metallica universe who could do anything. It's just manifestly peak whatever.

But then Day Two comes. First red flag - the "whats up guys" banter is exactly the same. Then I realize - so are the "big" beats for the stage show. When does the pyro go off? Same time during the set, just a different song. Beach ball time? 3 songs to go!

This is, with the exception of the song, *precisely* the way that Paul McCartney starts his shows. Big nostalgia action. They were in the round, the stage was cool. Beach balls drop from the ceiling, there was fire. It was fun! Not life changing, but fun. Like seeing the Stones.

I saw Metallica in LA, two days, no repeats. I saw Metallica in my early 20s as well, but that's the gap between shows. The first night I was struck by how anodyne it was - the opening segment of the show was "It's a long way to the top" by AC/DC, while showing pictures of the band with fans.
