After waving farewell to #PitcairnIsland (stunning in the setting sun), we’re thrilled to arrive at #HendersonIsland 🏝😍 One of the most incredible places on the planet is sitting just meters away, temporarily hidden by the blackness of night @seabirdsentinel.bsky.social@thelabandfield.bsky.social

Today Jenn & Alex set sail for #DucieAtoll, one of the most isolated places on our planet. Astronauts aboard the International Space Station 🚀 will be the nearest people to us (~400km away) whereas the nearest humans on Earth (#PitcairnIsland) are 470km from Ducie tinyurl.com/advcbvhx

Just how desperately do you want to escape your flatmates and co-workers 31 days into 2024?

Do you know how much a blue jay is worth to a farmer? A hundred years ago, a field called economic ornithology tried to determine the "exact economic status" of birds. Their conclusion? Without birds, "the ravages of the [insects] they prey upon would render the earth uninhabitable.” 🪶📗🗃️

Before pesticides, birds were a farmer's best defense against bugs. And the government’s economic ornithologists could tell you exactly how much each bird was worth.
