‘Just checking in to see how things are going over on tw—‘

Screenshot of a tweet saying that training to be a doctor should take no longer than two years because ‘it’s all memorisation not technically difficult stuff like maths or physics’
A screenshot of a discussion about LLMs ‘solving’ medicine. A user asks ‘let me know when the LLM can respect my pancreatic tumour.’ A reply; ‘it maybe can’t resect it, but it can give you instructions on how to have a family member help resect it for you.’

My day is bananas so I'm sneaking reads of the news between meetings and good golly miss molly this is wild www.science.org/content/arti...

Screenshot of article that reads: But over the past 2 years questions have arisen about some of Masliah’s research. A Science investigation has now found that scores of his lab studies at UCSD and NIA are riddled with apparently falsified Western blots—images used to show the presence of proteins—and micrographs of brain tissue. Numerous images seem to have been inappropriately reused within and across papers, sometimes published years apart in different journals, describing divergent experimental conditions.

After Science brought initial concerns about Masliah’s work to their attention, a neuroscientist and forensic analysts specializing in scientific work who had previously worked with Science produced a 300-page dossier revealing a steady stream of suspect images between 1997 and 2023 in 132 of his published research papers. (Science did not pay them for their work.)

Here's the most troubling story I've investigated all year. I hope it has an impact. Lower wage health workers faced deadly conditions during covid outbreaks in 2020. Now they're struggling with PTSD & more. Employers & the government have left them hanging. kffhealthnews.org/news/article...

If there was some "woke" Marxist cabal running academia, we'd be paid better, adjunctification wouldn't be a thing, and running a university like a business would be unthinkable. Alas.

I knew that John Carpenter Letterboxd account was fake once I saw Escape from L.A. rated lower than Escape from New York (Carpenter has said a few times he considers the sequel to be the superior film). Anyway, his response to this is, as usual, succinct and perfect.

Filmmaker John Carpenter reacting to a fake Letterboxd account pretending to be him by tweeting “What the hell is a Letterboxd!??”

"Because these programs cannot themselves be concerned with truth, and because they are designed to produce text that looks truth-apt without any actual concern for truth, it seems appropriate to call their outputs bullshit."
