How is this "kiss of death"? Apparently in Italy the mafia has a special way of "marking" a person to be killed by them by kissing them on the cheek so that the other mafia people know who to go for. The granny touching Miel's face was the one marking him down and the mayor's men knew where to go.

The last thing he remembers seeing was the men seizing the old wizard, and he has no idea whether the wizard is dead or alive. This is basically his backstory and why he ended up traveling the world as a merchant.

Later that day, Miel heard a knock on the door. When he opened it, the new mayor's men were behind it and attacked him and the wizard he was living with. He remembered what had happened to his mother when he was young, and he just sprinted out, never looking back.

When Miel grew up, the town got a new leader who restarted the purge. One day, while he was running errands for the wizard, an old lady approached him and touched his face. Miel was a bit weirded out but thought nothing more of it.

He lost his mother to the purge when he was younger, and an older wizard took him in and raised him as his own. The purging calmed down, but there were still people in the town who suspected that not all of the changelings had been killed.

Okay, so here is part one of this multi-part post on today's prompt. The gore is the memories we made along the way. Miel is a changeling who used to live in a town where changelings were a feared and hunted species.
