A nippy morning. Anu and I are out before sunrise, doing a quick check on some trees. There were high winds TĂźbinger night, so a lot has come down on the Helden tree. I should have laid nets down like last time, but had no time. And no time today as off to the fruit show again. Taken too much on.

In the foreground, a hillside Meadow covered in dew. Two dark trails showed the path the dog and I took. In the background, the sky is a Rosie pink waiting for the sunrise.
The ground under a large pear tree littered with pears.
On the right in the mid ground, a 15 meter tall pear tree. On the left four ground a border collie sitting. The background of the left the sky just before the sunrise.

I feel honour bound to try to ID the ones I couldn’t do on the spot! It flew by, but my social battery is empty, talking all day. And a lot of pressure people standing there hoping for an answer. But nice when I can instantly say what something is, but still a lot to learn. Tomorrow will be busier.

Doesn’t look busy now, but was a bit too busy for social media. Guess where I was sitting.

Along table covered in cardboard containers each with a different apple or pair variety in it. About 250 varieties.
A long table with a green tablecloth and signs saying apple and pear variety identification

Well, I think they might be overstating my expertise in the regional paper, but I‘ll be there doing my best to ID random pears at Gottersdorf this weekend. Translationen in the alt tag.

Translation

> Compare apples with pears: The Apple and Pear Days at the Odenwald Open-Air Museum in Gottersdorf will take place on Saturday and Sunday, including a variety identification event. There will also be an exhibition of old apple and pear varieties that used to be found everywhere in the orchards of rural southern Germany, but are now often rare and in some cases even endangered. On both days, visitors will have the opportunity to have their own apples and pears identified by the two orchard experts Barry Masterson (pears) and Werner Nußbaum (apples/Pomo-logenverband Hessen). The variety identification will take place on both days from 11 am to 4 pm in the threshing hall of the museum. On the meadow in front of the threshing hall, apple pressing will be demonstrated from around 11 a.m. and fresh juice can be tasted. The museum's beer garden and pub are open on Saturday from 1 pm to 4.30 pm and on Sunday from 11.30 am.
