Half of Doc Smith is inventing the tropes of space opera, half of it is weird shit that didn’t go anywhere, and some of it, like tractor beams, is both. It’s brilliant and stupid and also super sexist and racist.
Doc Smith’s Lensman universe runs on (weird) classical physics. FTL travel is accomplished with a device that cancels the ship’s inertia. Inertia-free ships bounce off any attack, so tractor beams are used to hold the enemy still while you blast them.
