Conversely Jack’s instincts throughout the series are nearly always progressive but are hemmed in by his very conservative surroundings to the point where he believes he is deeply conservative even while saving the local commons or not whipping his men.
I read Maturin as having “aged out” of revolutionary ideals, sort of like those modern liberals who firmly believe in all social change up to their 30th birthday and cannot accept any changes afterward.
