Indeed. It's what I appreciated about the event marking the end of Philosophy at Kent: www.kent.ac.uk/philosophy/c... Universities are being changed beyond recognition and the enormity of it isn't noticed, or the careers cut short & departments shrunk marked for the contribution they made.
From what I hear all around the sector, kind of Soft Crash that was inevitable is in full swing. You don't lose a huge amount of staff to compulsory redundancy, but you do get a really big wave of early retirement and voluntaries.
