A digital exhibit that I curated is live now! From Samurai into Engineers marks the 150th anniversary of the graduation of MIT’s first Japanese student, Eiichirō Honma (SB 1874), and highlights the experiences of MIT's first Japanese students. digital-exhibits.libraries.mit.edu/s/from-samur...

Deleting all of the place of publication names from the bibliography of my book manuscript as I watch the word count go down.

(I played no role in putting this together and was surprised to see a conference on Ise by the School of Architecture--definitely an interesting and different perspective)

When you meet a public toilet architect at a conference who is also interested in Asian religions 💩

Email text: Please call me Bryan! It was great to chat.

The readings I was thinking of were all Buddhist. Specifically, I remembered a chapter in the Chan (Chinese Zen) monastic rules on toilets.

You can find that in pages 205–206 in this book: Yifa. The Origins of Buddhist Monastic Codes in China: An Annotated Translation and Study of the Chanyuan Qinggui. University of Hawai’i Press, 2002. http://www.jstor.org/stable/j.ctt6wqx8h.

The Japanese monk Dōgen also addresses toilets in some of his writings. Here’s one good example: https://www.thezensite.com/ZenTeachings/Dogen_Teachings/Shobogenzo/007senjo.pdf

I’m also attaching a recent book that deals with some of these issues in India and China (see chapter 2).

I don’t really know of any work on Shinto and toilets…a good topic for someone!

Best,
Bryan

The whole 1990 NKOTB tour just kind of blurs together for me, just one stadium riot after the next 😂

They were my first concert! 1990, Foxboro Stadium, my cousin’s 11th birthday.
