The color purple is historically associated with royalty & power because of several species of predatory sea snails in the family Muricidae. Their mucus made kings look regal. The Phoenicians built a vast trading empire around trade in snail mucus more precious than silver. Let's talk about it.

"Fabrics dyed in the current era from different species of sea snail. The colors in this photograph may not represent them precisely."

It's a museum display on Wikimedia, showing some snail shells and cloth dyed from their mucus.

Very cool, interestingly the purple from the shells of quahog clams was drilled into beads to form wampum which was used in a variety of ceremonial and trade purposes. Purple mollusk rule

Thanks for this! :-) There is an archaeological site 'Sipar' in northern Istria, Croatia, a Roman settlement that got really wealthy harvesting those snails - huge amounts of shells were found there, and at least two basins for keeping the mucuous beasts ... kapjasa.si/en/island-of...

Purple is just fascinating. Here's a short piece I wrote about why it's also perceptually special. Of course, I also mentioned Prince.

Princeton Insights reviews new research on the perception of colors (like purple) in hummingbirds.

It reminds me a little bit of oud. Hugely valuable perfume ingredient, with higher-grade stuff going for hundreds to thousands of dollars per fl oz. Where does it come from? The fungicidal sap produced by Aquilaria trees to fight off infection by a parasitic fungus.
