I have no data but I feel like Australian are more reticent to talk to journalists than other nationalities. If I was in the position of someone being written about, even if the piece might be critical, I would always at least speak on background even if I didn't want to be quoted to ensure accuracy
The question is whether this wariness is cultural or an apprehension of Australian media in particular

Lack of confidence in the journalists. Whenever I read journalists (at least those who are not SMEs) in my specific area, they are usually so wrong, that I assume A) they did not speak to SMEs, B) they did speak to SMEs, but ignored their answers. I assume they'd treat anything I said the same.
Maybe it isn’t Australians who are different, but Australian journalists?
