There is a certain mentality, and I suspect it's one that's quite common among career politicians, that takes this stuff as its due. In their eyes, they get free stuff because they deserve it.

Well it certainly doesn't happen in the UK. I don't think it's a coincidence that prices tend to peak on days when many low-income people, who've been putting off filling up because they're broke and now have a near dry tank, get paid. That and immediately before public holidays.
