January 2024 was the warmest January on record.
New data from CopernicusECMWF shows that we've now had
- the eighth record breaking month in a row and
- twelve months (Feb 23-Jan 24) with global temperatures more than 1.5ºC above the pre-industrial reference baseline. 🧪⚒️

Letter from John Imbrie to Quaternary geologist DQ Bowen in 1979 (found by Steve Barker inside one of DQ’s books). Love the reference to the Oxford fellow 😂

Letter to DQ Bowen from John Imbrie. Second paragraph reads “your treatment of Hays et Al, appropriately brief, is cautious but fair. By your next edition, there will be sufficient evidence to convince all but the celibate monks of Tibet, and perhaps the odd fellow in Oxford. Watch for a paper in science by Komintz and Pisias. Cordially, John Imbrie.

“Climate tipping points are nearer than you think – our new report warns of catastrophic risk” David Armstrong-McKay & I provide some thoughts (I have many other thoughts about this, most of them unpublishable). theconversation.com/climate-tipp...?

Coral reefs are already being lost, and four other vital climate systems may tip soon.

The warming of November temperatures in the Arctic by decade... (yes, it's a lot) Data from cds.climate.copernicus.eu/cdsapp#!/dat...

Four polar stereographic maps showing Arctic near-surface air temperature anomalies for the month of November in 1983-1992, 1993-2002, 2003-2012, and 2013-2022. Most all areas are observing long-term warming, which is largest over the Arctic Ocean.
