Leaning in and trusting it is part of the accepting and getting along with oneself in the world, I think. Special interests get a bad wrap when it’s about replacing yourself with something, instead of applying a new perspective.
It was a stepping stone, building the encyclopedia to bring on the next step of performance and criticism. And it just keeps zooming out as time goes on; not a good or bad thing, but a static relationship to typicality that scales and isn’t something you just fix.
This is how I made a sharp turn from thinking I’d be some kind of cellular biologist to incoming English major. The shift to novels and analysis in high school showed me a sandbox where I could play out different sets of rules in the confines of a smaller, given context. And the rest was history.
