actually, I did this routinely when I wore soft-lens contacts. Special joy to swipe a contact off your eyeball with a capsaicin-contaminated finger. But, 3% H₂O₂ is magic...

Reflecting on 30+ yrs in academia, when I started, simply no such thing as a predatory conference—nor predatory journals (only "bottom-feeding" journals 😂). By end of my career, I had to regularly counsel my grad students & postdocs about them, lest they be easily taken in. #AcademicSky#ChemSky

(Cross-post from The Bad Place) I suppose we're doing this again. This is incorrect: the Roman army relied heavily on non-citizens throughout nearly the whole of Roman history, including periods of its greatest success in the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC, when Rome came to dominate the Mediterranean.1/

An Elon Musk tweet, claiming that "Near the fall of the Roman Empire, the Roman Army also increasingly relied on non-citizens," a claim that is, at best, deceptive.

you might want to look very carefully at the invitation, as you are correct that it's rather sketchy to invite someone on two days notice. is it a reputable conference? did they add you at the last minute because they felt they needed to check some box they'd failed at originally? be judicious.
