I was at some event once with my father-in-law where they did a trite "Would any veterans please rise?" announcement and he kept sitting like "Uh... why?" He's one Vietnam vet who isn't craving extra praise.
I've had this simmering feeling for a few decades but just this week I read a story about a guy who wants to support other veterans (which... fine!) and it included a throwaway sentence about being inspired by the disrespect toward Vietnam veterans with no supporting evidence.
Full disclosure: my father-in-law served in the Vietnam War and he doesn't really care about his veteran status at all. It was a couple years of his life and he moved on.
