COT24 - Commission on Tephrochronology Catania 2024 is underway. Beautiful setting, great science, ash samples and ice cream. #tephratastic

Looking up to the dome of a monastery from a courtyard/atrium.

A 35mm film canister containing ash from the most recent eruption of Etna.

Ciao Etna, I see you behind those clouds! Arrived in beautiful Catania for the Commission on Tephrochronology conference. I have sample bags and an espresso, what else could I need? 🌋⚒️☕️👌

Saddened to hear that Hans-Ulrich Schmincke passed away in August. His impact on volcanology has been enormous and will continue. I only spent a few days at Laacher See with him, but learnt a lot. And I enjoyed his regular emails asking what I’ve published on the Laacher See Eruption.

A geologist with white beard and wrapped up for the cold stood with a cliff of tephra behind him.

Finally made it to Holkham Beach (albeit not primarily to check out the geomorphology and salt marsh). Now I only need to get stranded on Scolt Head Island and I guess I’m officially a Cambridge Geographer …right?@harrietallengeog.bsky.social

A picture in two parts, above and below a central flat horizon. The top half is clear blue sky. From the horizon a sandy strip extends toward the viewer, with salt marsh visible along each edge. Some lighter sand and quite a few people can be seen in the distance at the centre of the photo. The sea is too far out to be seen.
