I don’t understand this victory lap. The people advocating for a more open process knew it was unlikely but thought it was worth trying. What exactly are you celebrating?

Who chooses? One of the options in the screenshot below. Who do they choose? Harris would be the front runner. I can promise you I am aware of the many challenges that might emerge with doing this. My point is that this is not insurmountable. It is possible if people overcome their hangups.

Yes, I’m imagining something like 1-2 debates, not the Mr Beast stuff. IMO a party that was serious about beating Trump would try to do something like this, even though it would be out of the ordinary and could get messy. I’d think there’s a 10-20% chance it happens.

Sorry just replaced post with a minor edit

I’m imagining something with 1-2 debates and not much else. Of course this is unlikely to happen, for many reasons. Regarding your point about people with busy schedules: A party that was serious about winning would move people’s schedules around.

To pose this more concretely, what probability would you assign to some sort of open primary?

I feel like it's easy to be cynical about creative and imaginative ideas. Obviously a mini-primary is unlikely and many of the components in this proposal are impossible, but overall the idea of an open primary seems positive-EV, even though it is low probability.

Sounds like it should mean “scintillating” or maybe “beady”

Want to bet on who wins if Biden stays the nominee?

More importantly, I don't think debates over what is more or less democratic is the most important issue here. Something exceptional happened at the debate last month. The most important thing is to beat Trump, and if you want to win you have to try something new.
