It was *supposed* to be fine. The electronics using the USB-C standard were *supposed* to negotiate the correct charging information when connected. But then, like all standards, everyone had an opinion on it...
They knew it was fraud but it would look good as a nice sales bump, even if it was imaginary money that they would ultimately never see. You also would have been responsible for not checking their ID if it ended up being a problem.
