They are turning our carefully crafted sentences, the ones we read out loud to test their musicality, the ones where we labored for an hour to find one perfect word, the ones where we left the adverb in defiantly, into soulless AI slop that no one enjoys reading, and it breaks me.

I hate the "why aren't women having more kids" framing because it begins in the assumption that women's duty is to reproduce and their decisions are wrong. I'd love to see more "what do women want? whats keeping them from achieving it? how can we make that possible?"

The change in behavior is measurable, but also not concerning. It indicates a retreat from the excesses of individuality (that have driven a lot of antisocial behavior over the last half-century!) towards a greater sense of being part of a community. These pendulums swing. It’s okay.

But also, GOOD. There are a lot of uninformed opinions that just need to be kept under one’s hat. Not wanting to hurt other people by yapping? Good! The ability to moderate one’s thoughts and expressions is a sign of adulthood and maturity! It’s good when racists are afraid to be racist in public!

Not sure where the PsyToday writer gets his 2/3rds fear social consequences of voicing unpopular opinions, because the actual change over 20 years was about 6.5% on the uniqueness scale. Here’s the original study. The PT article definitely drives clicks, though.

Ah I see we’re doing “just move” discourse again. What if we…didn’t. What if we all got really really mad at Exxon Mobile and ChatGPT freaks instead of telling people with no resources to move away from their communities because it makes you feel slightly more in control to think that will save you
