I will say this for a movie that hits almost every expected animated movie plot beat: It frequently surprised me with how daring it was in its storytelling.

Themes they have circled their entire careers, distilled to their essences by directors who are aware they only have so many films left in them, especially in a field (animation) that has become ever more precarious.
