When I run Inspectres, I usually have a rival group called Spook Smashers that are slicker and better funded than the PCs. Because let's face it, the PCs are the Ghost Facers.
This is why Sword Opera has themes and discussions about violence baked right in at the beginning. Tone and intent are crucial to dealing with violence in stories. I want to revel in balletic joy of action and the emotional resonance of the characters, so I tune my games a certain way.
Stakes are raised by endangering an entire hospital. So, so many innocent people are brutally killed to demonstrate the villain's utter remorselessness. Kill all the cops/mobsters you want, but as soon as innocent people are being known down in a public place, it feels like a mass shooting. 🧵
The same day we dropped Sword Opera, I rewatched John Woo's Hard Boiled (1992) and it didn't hit for me like it used to. It's still an action tour-de-force, but the world has changed around it. Even Chow Yun Fat can't make me love the "tortured hero cop" protagonist. It's not fun anymore. 🧵
