twitter is a nazi hellhole but it really cannot be overstated enough that older generations that get their news from cable or print are also poisoning their brains. there really isn't a good way to get news beyond 'find some people in media you trust and follow them on social'
This is literally how I've gotten the majority of my news for years. I have personally curated by topic twitter lists. I'd like to move to reading only here on Bluesky, but for now I still log in there too.
Following sources that you can wholeheartedly distrust can also be very helpful. I follow an alt-right site that Russia uses to launder their disinfo into the American MSM discourse. Hence I knew about the "Haitian are eating pets" BS long before it exploded onto the debate stage.
It also helps to speak other languages. Foreign media reporting on issues not in their own backyard tend to be more objective if you pick sources with some journalistic integrity.
Print is still better than relying primarily on social media, even the NYT.
Even that is getting more and more difficult, considering the uptick in these very same people either go full grift or full crazy
MANY people have poisoned brains in the USA now. It isn't just the old or the young or the rightwing --people across the ages and political spectrum. However, some have it worse than others.
my mom is a msnbc/cnn/local news watcher and she is constantly baffled at how i know more about what's going on than she does despite not watching tv. the concept of finding people you trust and following them does not compute.
PBS seems close to good with the NewsHour, but sure it's impossible to find a "mainstream" news source that will actually call out things like the right being explicitly fascist with their words and actions.
Completely agree. This is the way I’ve been getting news for the last 8-9 years. I keep hoping someone will back the journalists with integrity and start a real paper or network with accountability.
