The Dickin Medal is the highest award that can be issued to animals in British military service. Bearing the words "We Also Serve" it has been awarded 75 times since its creation in 1943. Only one cat has ever received the award. This is the story of Able Seacat Simon, of HMS Amethyst. 🧵 1/25
This might be my moment to mention (if I haven't already) that my mother in law used to have a life size "replica" of Simon that she kept in front of her fireplace. Visitors often thought it was a genuine cat sleeping. I must try and find a photo of it.
Not me crying at work about Able Seacat Simon 😭
I learned about Simon on here podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/s... he was a boss and a legend RIP to a real one

…but how do the military animals decide who to give a medal to? Is there a chain of command structure or a committee?
Is that because they’re not natural altruists?
@catsofyore.bsky.social This seems like a tale you'd enjoy :)
I love this story. Thanks for bringing it to Bluesky!
Thank you, that was beautiful
