Shades of John Lanchester's Capital there - when you need that million quid bonus just to meet your obligations. It's almost as if they'd never heard of Parkinson's Second Law. As for culture wars/pocketbook concerns - "it's the economy, stupid" still holds.
Surely also true for less wealthy people? Hence policies such as the "pension triple lock", etc. The majority really feel the impact of marginal tax rises, VAT increases, mortgage rates (uber-rich less so). And frequently vote accordingly - giving rise to the "shy Tory" phenomenon.
