A lot of people with little knowledge of modern astro research but some knowledge of science overall end up at this point, which tells me it's more of a sci-comm issue - BM&BE haven't been explained in a way scientifically-minded non-astro-scientists can get a grasp on.

The key feature in many is going for a raw emotional response, so we react before we think through the entire situation, what is going on exactly, etc. "Stop. Breathe. Think. " is enough for most people to see through most scams.
