They really had no choice after the pager attack. Hezbollah was clearly weakened by that attack. Once the pager attack happened, an escalation was the only real choice.

I HOPE it was the other way around: they took advantage of the pagers to knock out communication so that this attack was successful. In that case the whole operation becomes one valid operation (knocking out communications at the start of an operation is valid military tactics).
