Thermal energy storage doesn’t get enough attention. The world’s thermal storage facility currently being built in Finland will be able to store a whopping 90GWh - that’s 30x more than the largest electric storage facility in operation today. interestingengineering.com/energy/caver...

The Varanto project design comprises three caverns, each measuring over 900 feet (300 m) long, 131 feet (40 m) high, and 65 feet (20 m) wide.

Do wind farms kill birds? Yes but far less than other hazards. www.sustainabilitybynumbers.com/p/wind-power...

Batteries just keep on getting cheaper and cheaper. The average price of lithium-ion battery cells dropped from $290 per kilowatt-hour in 2014 to $103 in 2023.

Grid constraints are the next frontier of the energy transition. How can we make better use of the grid we already have and minimise costs? My colleague Zsuzsanna Pató at the Regulatory Assistance Project (RAP) put together this helpful toolbox: www.raponline.org/toolkit/rip-...

Electrification is efficiency. When we electrify our energy systems coupled with clean electricity, something remarkable occurs: significant inefficiencies disappear. In a decarbonized world, our energy demand will be much lower than it is today. www.sustainabilitybynumbers.com/p/electrific...

“Your EV will just run on coal.” Not quite. We often charge when it’s cheapest and there are a lot of renewables on the system. Last night we had a lot of wind. I charged and got paid as prices went negative.

One argument frequently used against electric vehicles and heat pumps is that they just run on dirty fossil fuels as these plants often operate at the margin in many countries. Here's why I think those claims are misguided. www.energymonitor.ai/electrificat...

Electrification need not increase emissions, argues Jan Rosenow from the Regulatory Assistance Project, if the focus is on making it clean.

I disagree with that. It depends on many factors but with the right install and tariff you can actually see a significant reduction in running costs today even in the UK. More here where my analysis is covered (scroll down to the graph with many lines): www.which.co.uk/reviews/grou...
