New cephalopod art! 🦑🐙🐡 I took the base photo this summer of one of the gorgeous little Ruby Octopus @invertebabe.bsky.social was studying and then had a lot of fun this weekend playing with it in photopea. I usually strive to get my prints accurate to life but this was a fun experiment 🔗 in reply

A ruby octopus wraps its arms in a spiral showing off its suckers. The photograph has been edited into vibrant psychedelic colors with the arms in magenta with indigo shadows and yellow, red, and green in the suckers. The arm framing the bottom edge is blue and green. Across all the arms individual chromatophores are like colorful pointilism.

Forty-five years ago today, a US Vela nuclear-test-monitoring satellite detected the distinctive double-flash signature of a nuclear explosion over the South Atlantic Ocean. Although a White House scientific panel later dismissed the possibility, many speculated it was a clandestine Israeli test.

The third #sciArtSeptember prompt for deep sea month is abyssal - the lightless, extreme pressure and low oxygen zone 4 to 6 km below the surface. 🐡🧪🐙 So I made a lino block print of a charming Grimpoteuthis octopus, one of a genus of pelagic cirrate (finned) octopods known as the dumbo octopuses. 🧵

My 9.25” x 12.5” Lino block print of a Grimpoteuthis octopus, one of a genus of pelagic cirrate (finned) octopods known as the dumbo octopuses. The octopus is mostly bluish with red at the top and on its ear-like fins. Its tentacles are brown and all spiralling up close to its body. The dark water around it is blue-black.
