Typical. No political instincts.

The contempt for younger members shown in this internal memo for the AICP foreshadows the accusations that the profession was top-heavy and unresponsive beginning in the 50s. Ironic too since these "longest standing" members were making it up in their days of callowness.

Several of the members of longest standing believe that AIP is doing as well as could be expected for a small group with limited financial resources - no worse than similar small groups. They are opposed to any move that would bring in more members - either juniors or men of other techniques - because to them the AIP should be limited to "professional planners of requisite qualifications"; "in-crease in size gained at the cost of lower standards or dilution will not...make for greater influence or a more effective performance of its functions." One member says that "the younger members don't avail themselves of the opportunities offered them." Another asks where "they find a better forum of their peers? Are they silenced at our meetings?.. There is a limit to the amount of time which we who are still working hard can afford to spend in listening to callowness."

Yes, it was basically miserly cost cutting crossed with CIAM ideas about high rise communities.

Would he actually have done worse at the general election if there was a single primary and it was presidential-year? Garcia’s demos were the most dependable voters.

What does Rick Olmsted mean when he says John Russell Pope is "carnal?"
