When I was a kid nobody ever spoke of same-sex partners, and I never heard any references to them, derogatory or otherwise. (I’m old.) Yet we kids knew with absolute certainty that the two middle-aged neighbor ladies who lived in the same house were a couple. It just wasn’t a big deal.
