This is a good map to visualize the three Atlantic subduction zones: Scotia, Lesser Antilles and Gibraltar. Source: doi.org/10.1017/S001...#subductioninvasion

A cool realisation. We have now modelled the formation of the three Atlantic subduction zones. Something I could only dream a few years back. Many thanks to all the co-authors for making it possible. It was a long way, but it was a lot of fun 😎 #subductioninvasion

The Atlantic Ocean Is Being Invaded

The Atlantic Ocean won't last forever. When it starts to close, it will be subduction zones that consume oceanic crust. New research suggest one is propagating into the Atlantic today.

Subduction zones are difficult to start in Atlantic-type oceans. Our paper explores the alternative mechanisms of invasion, in which a subduction zone migrates from a dying ocean to a new growing ocean. Here's the main figure of the paper. doi.org/10.1130/G516...#geology

"Gibraltar subduction zone is invading the Atlantic" New paper! Our geodynamic models suggest that the Gibraltar subduction zone may propagate inside the Atlantic after a period of quiescence. Video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=2I13...pubs.geoscienceworld.org/gsa/geology/...

If you are PhD candidate and you like Earth System Science, then maybe this will interest you. It is also a great opportunity to visit Portugal and to network with other PhD candidates. #Earthsystem#geosciencesidl.ciencias.ulisboa.pt/2024-summer-...

The quake was actually a bit further to the south, closer to the plate boundary. But it is a diffuse plate boundary. There must be some really big faults there to generate these magnitudes. But yes, it can be inherited extensional structures being reactivated.

And it was not the only one. In 1969, there was another magnitude 7.9 here. This time right below a completely flat abyssal plain without any mapped major fault. There's a nice story about it here: www.nationalgeographic.com/science/arti...
