Does Middlesex exist? An ontological enquiry. PLUS: an exciting announcement
An ontological enquiry.
Loved this (see QT.) Is there an example of "territorial units not backed up by other forms of identity" that *does* still exist? Maybe Bolton? (And I saw someone else already suggested Rutland... was Rutland already the trope when Passport to Pimlico was written?)
I'll add it to my list of imaginary places, like Narnia, Ruritania and Australia
Jonn Elledge = the home counties Jean Baudrillard
Seeing people put it in their addresses irrationally gets my hackles up, just because I (probably quite unfairly) associate doing so with a certain kind of man who writes a lot of letters to the council.
I've lived and worked in it for thirteen years. It's just west of Suffolk, south west of Essex and north of Norfolk
It exists for cricket, archaeological societies (London and Middlesex Archaeological Society www.lamas.org.uk) and Victoria County Histories. What more do you need.
Enjoyed that. Learned a lot.
For my bowls playing mother in law it’s a yes. When her old club at the National Physical Laboratory closed down she refused to go to a club this side of Bushy Park because she plays league for Middlesex.
I don’t care either way as long as they don’t beat Sussex in the next 2 days.
Can't believe you did a piece on Middlesex and didn't mention Russell Grant. I thought that was compulsory
