If you haven't had a loved one in jail, you may have no idea what a hideously cruel racket prison telecom really is. The rates for calls or emails are extortionate--because the contractors literally have a captive audience. Good on Massachusetts for ending this vile practice.
Massachusetts just made prison communications free. The reform eliminates the exorbitant charges incarcerated people and their loved ones face to stay in touch, removing a heavy financial burden for thousands.

JUST IN: The Judiciary Committee of Pennsylvania’s state House today advanced legislation to repeal the death penalty. House Bill 999 advanced on a vote of 15 to 10, with one Republican crossing over to join all Democrats in favor of abolition.
