Don't think it helps that a bunch of people on the right use "social conservative" to mean "tough on crime and immigration", then try to impute other social conservative positions onto that group.

It’s a common failure mode to go “the public agrees with us on [an issue in that political quadrant] therefore they agree with us on [a series of increasingly niche and unpopular positions]”.
