“They” for singular indefinite is much more elegant than any of the alternatives: he, she, switching between the two at random, he or she, he/she. We use “you” for both singular and plural, why not “they?” If someone wants to invent something better have at it, but I’m using they for now.

This might even need to go in the syllabus as an epigraph right before the reading schedule.
