The Night of the Hunter: A Southern Gothic childrens’ fable that features one of the most terrifying villains I’ve ever witnessed that’s atmospheric and oppressive. The soul of American Christianity, fought between a woman of God and a preacher who’s a wolf in sheep’s clothing.
Warriors: The Broken Code (esp. Book 6): Warrior Cats’ reckoning. Thrilling, emotional, and occasionally horrifying too. It ends its propulsive arc with a quiet plea to face the absence you feel within, and not let yourself bury your emotions for the sake of the status quo.
Raising Arizona: The drop of cinematic Nitro I’ve needed all year. The Coen Bros. directed the world’s most explosive and gorgeous Road Runner cartoon about infertility, and parenthood with loads of wonderful farce and heart. Cried as much as I laughed. A new all-time favorite.
Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of War of the Worlds: One of the finest and oldest sci-fi tales gets what I believe is its most definitely retelling. The war of Mars and Earth morphs into a musical war of synth and earth. Rock and orchestra. A rock opera like no other. Ulla!!!
Everywhere at the End of Time: A musical odyssey like nothing I’ve ever experienced or maybe ever will. The moment you let yourself get lost within this depiction of dementia, it’s a work that will stick with you, as you ponder yourself and why you value your memories and being.
Will be posting my Top 10 Favorite Media Experiences of 2023 (as of November and in no definitive order) Each piece of media I’ve provided a quote I loved from the work.
Another one down, this time Winds of Change. The WindClan rebellion and Mudclaw story stuff I barely remember from TNP so it was nice to have a refresher on it, though more about Hawkfrost’s treachery. Pretty good. Might have my favorite looking battle sequence ever drawn.
