Drone footage of Hot Springs, NC. Really awful, this is such a nice town. Note the woody debris piled behind the small bridge. This will have blocked the flow, increasing the amount of water going through the town. This is common in big floods, but not often modeled. www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRW4...

As someone who studies extreme events, I'm pretty used to the rapid assessment - trying to gather all sorts of data to piece together what happened. It now feels very strange to be doing this not for science, but to try to figure out what hurricane Helene has done to family members...
