Most AAA games that are kind of mid are that way because of unclear direction/production goals. A set of systems that work well, but didn't get a pass to try and unify them until the latter stages of development. Great games need their features to have unification as soon as possible.
Hand grinding coffee is great. Doing a bit of manual work & putting effort into prepare the things you eat/drink is always more satisfying.

During Xbox's Gamescom in LA event last week, Kazuma had the chance to finally go hands-on with Obsidian's upcoming RPG, Avowed, and came away impressed by the worldbuilding on offer.

Personally I think they should try to do an E.Y.E divine cybermancy adaptation with Nicholas Cage in a leading role and someone completely unhinged directing.
On a design level, it didn't need the big update (but it helped). On a technical level... It definitely needed the big update.
