Thanks! We reached that conclusion when we didn't see any evidence of sentient nonhumans aside from the monsters through the character creation portion, but it's a good note for anyone who wants to play!
So in the future if there's a game we see has a Cat Expansion, we'll get it, but only to see if it has stats for playing as a cat that aren't in the core book. Otherwise, we'll be alerting you to its existence and then ignoring it for the rest of the episode. For Content.
So that means these supplements are really just telling us that playing a cat in this game means we aren't gonna explore the full character creation system, we aren't allowed to choose our play style, and we can't even work out on our own what our role in the party might be.
They've both had a condensed version of character creation, gave significantly fewer options in terms of class/abilities, and heavily assume an entirely different style of play from the rest of the party.
Part of why our episodes usually end up somewhere between 60 and 90 minutes is that we actually try and follow the whole character creation process from start to finish. And both of the Cat Expansions we looked at don't really give us the opportunity to do that.
And I know that kind of goes against one of the show's principles of "if the game includes a way to play a cat, we use it," but they kinda make for short, boring, and altogether confusing episodes.
After having done 2 games at this point on the show (one coming out soon) that have come with expansions that just lay out how the designer thinks a cat should work in their game, I don't think we'll be covering those kinds of expansions on the show anymore.
Good morning, dear listeners! It's that time again! We've got a new episode for you, and this one has two cats for the price of one! I mean, one of them might not ACTUALLY be a cat, but the other one surely is! It's Monsters and Other Childish Things by Arc Dream Publishing! (guest not on Bluesky)
