I heartily agree with your general point but I think that Pete Mansoor does fit this description. Got a PhD in history at Ohio State under Allan Millett and Wick Murray and was a brigade commander in Iraq in the aughts. He's now the General Raymond E. Mason Jr. Chair in Military History at OSU.
Yeah, especially if you are writing about the British and Commonwealth efforts in World War I. Not so much if you are writing about the Americans. Most Americans only know there was a WWI by inference from the fact that there was a WWII.
