It's not SF but I used to love John Bellairs' books when I was around that age (gothic horror for kids basically). The House with the Clock in its Walls is the first one I think. Bonus if you can get the editions with Edward Gorey's illustrations. Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster was another fave.
